Indonesia and Canada collaborate to increase Indonesian coffee

BANYUWANGI – The increasing consumption of coffee in the country and the high enthusiasm that has led to many new coffee entrepreneurs are opportunities that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) must take advantage of. This includes increasing coffee production and production process efficiency, which in turn will increase Indonesian coffee exports worldwide, including to Canada. This was conveyed by Deputy Minister of Trade Jerry Sambuaga at the National Business Meeting Ijen Coffee Market in Banyuwangi, today, Wednesday (20/7).

“The collaboration between the Governments of Indonesia and Canada through NSLIC/NSELRED is a synchronization effort in connecting coffee farmers and SMEs to big coffee businesses in Indonesia. That way, it will open up opportunities for cooperation in meeting coffee needs,” explained the Vice Minister of Trade.

The Vice Minister of Trade expressed his appreciation to NSLIC/NSELRED as the core project of a sustainable partnership between the Governments of Indonesia and Canada that has existed since 2016. This program is considered very good because it has benefited more than 5,000 SMEs and 71,000 business actors.

In addition, the Ministry of Trade has also collaborated with Arise Plus and the European Union to promote and increase awareness of Geographical Indications (GI) as an important component in increasing Indonesian coffee exports through branding and the production of Indonesian GI products.

Currently, there are 111 Indonesian GI products, including Ijen-Raung Coffee, Kintamani Coffee, Wamena Coffee, Sindoro-Cleft Coffee, Kalosi Coffee, Manggarai Coffee, Mandailing Coffee, Gayo Coffee, Preanger Coffee, Sipirok Coffee, Koerintji Coffee, Coffee Simalungun, Lintong Coffee, Toraja Coffee, and so on. The value of Indonesian coffee exports (HS 0901) to the world in 2021 will reach USD 851 million and Indonesia occupies the 13th position as a coffee exporter to the world. The value of coffee exports for the January-May 2022 period reached USD 394 million, an increase of 37 percent over the same period in the previous year.
